Class overview:

Welcome to the Beech Class page. We hope you find the information useful and informative.

Beech class is the Year 5 class at Old Buckenham Primary School and begin the journey into upper Key stage 2. We take pride in the positive learning environment in Beech class and we work hard to provide a supportive classroom where every child can thrive. We look to build on the knowledge and skills children have learnt in the preceeding years and develop their understanding in our broad and balanced curriculum.

We follow the National Curriculum as a starting point for our learning in Beech class, but we always look for ways to enhance children's understanding and learning. It is important for children to be as independent as possible in Key stage 2, so we aim to give children the resources, skills and knowledge to work independently in all areas and extend their learning.

The 'Old Buck Way':

Embedded within our school ethos is the mantra: 'Ready, Respectful and Safe'. These three words are taught throughout all parts of our curriculum and are at the heart of our whole school approach. We have high expectations of behaviour in Beech class and children are expected to understand and and follow our school rules at all times.

Our Values:

At Old Buckenham, we also have 5 core values which we teach our children explicitly throughout our curriculum.

These values are:

               Respect                 Honesty                Communication              Teamwork              Resilience

We celebrate these values in the Key Stage 2 values assembly every Tuesday where a child who has emboded our half term value in a particular way is awarded a values certificate. We also consistently praise children every day for following our school values and have high expectations of the children.

Our Curriculum

In Beech class we use the National Curriculum for Upper Key Stage 2 as a starting point for out learning. Then we use various schemes and approaches to broaden our curriculum.

English writing: In our writing lessons we use The Write Stuff by Jane Considine to guide our teaching. This combines experience days, sentence stacking days and a clear independent writing sequence to enable children to extend their writing and continually improve.

English reading: We follow a whole class reading approach to teach a variety of texts across the year. We use these lessons to teach the fundamentals of reading comprehension, from retrieval, to inference and sequencing. We aim to use a wide variety of texts, including Great Expectations (abridged) by Charles Dickens, Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo and Brother Eagle Sister sky, a Native American speech. We also encourage fluency and decoding skills throughout all areas of our curriculum.

Brother Eagle, Sister Sky - Music is Elementary

Maths: In Maths we use White Rose Maths as the fundamental start of our Maths teaching. This teaches Maths topics in blocks throughout the year. We cover: place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, shape, time, statistics, decimals and percentages, perimeter and area, position and direction, measurement, negative numbers and converting units.

Science: In science we aim to encourage children's sense of wonder and curiosity in the different strands of Science. We conduct experiments in all half terms and in every topic. Whilst conducting an experiment we work to use consistent variables and create fair testing. Our topics are: Everyday materials, Forces, Space, Living things and their habitats and Animals including humans.
